Why I Write in So Many Lanes (And Why I'm Not Going to Stop)

People ask me all the time how I do it.

How does a firefighter write street fiction? How does a guy who responds to Maydays and hazmat calls sit down and write a children's book? How does someone who runs into burning buildings also write about productivity frameworks and finishing your goals?

The honest answer is that none of those things is as far apart as they look from the outside.

They all come from the same place. A life that has never fit neatly into one box.

I've Always Lived in Multiple Worlds

I grew up in Cleveland in a neighborhood where survival was real, and imagination was necessary. I went from those streets to fire academies, paramedic school, and the police academy. I went from East Cleveland, one of the most distressed cities in the region, to the west side of Chicago, where the stories are heavy, and the news cameras don't always show up.

I became a firefighter, a paramedic, a husband, a father, an author, and a coach. Not one after the other. All at the same time.

When you live like that, you don't see the world in one lane. You see it in all of them at once. And when you write from that place, everything you put on the page carries a piece of that full picture.

Every Book Comes from Something Real

Bleed: Shadows of Redemption came from the corners I grew up around, the calls I responded to, and the voices I felt weren't being told on their own terms.

Hey, New Guy! came from watching too many people walk into the fire service completely unprepared, and wanting to change that. It came from 20 years of accumulated knowledge that I felt obligated to pass on.

Zoë Is Going to Be a Fire Engine! came from a three-year-old girl with a specific dream and a father who was paying attention.

Built to Finish came from watching people, including myself at times, start strong and fade out before the finish line. It came from wanting to give people a real system to close the gap between starting and being done.

None of these books was written because I was trying to build a catalog. They were written because something in my life demanded to be said.

The Fire Service Taught Me to Show Up Everywhere

Here's what 20-plus years in the fire service will teach you. You don't get to choose what comes through the door. You show up, and you do the work in front of you. A structure fire. A medical call. A hazmat situation. A technical rescue. You train for all of it because the job doesn't ask what you're comfortable with.

Writing is the same way for me.

I don't get to choose what story is ready to come out. I just show up and do the work. Some days, that work looks like a chapter of fiction. Some days it looks like a coaching framework. Some days it looks like a children's book about a little girl who wants to spray water.

All of it is honest. All of it is mine.

The Common Thread

If you look at everything I've written and everything I'm building through Championized, there is one thread running through it all.

People. And the grit it takes to keep going.

Frank Wright is fighting to survive and find redemption. The new candidate is fighting to build a career worth having. Zoë is fighting for the right to dream as big as she wants. The person holding Built to Finish is fighting to finally complete what they started.

Every lane I write in is really the same lane. It's just a different vehicle on the same road.

I write in so many genres because life doesn't come in just one. And if something I've written finds the right reader at the right moment and helps them push through, keep going, or just feel seen, then every word was worth it.

That's why I write.

That's why I'm not going to stop.

Why My Daughter Inspired the Best Book I've Ever Written

It started with a three-year-old and a very specific career goal.

My daughter Zoë didn't tell me she wanted to be a firefighter. She told me she wanted to be a fire engine. Not a firefighter. A fire engine. And spray water.

I couldn't argue with that level of commitment.

Education Wrapped in Imagination

Here's something that might surprise you. On the first day of the fire academy, one of the most common questions from new candidates is what's the difference between an engine and a truck.

Zoë answered that question before most of them ever thought to ask it.

This book was built on two things. Imagination and education. I wanted to explain the fire service in a way that a child could understand and connect with. But I also wanted to give kids and parents permission to dream without limiting what those dreams could look like. Zoë didn't say she wanted to fight fires. She said she wanted to be the engine. She wanted to be the thing that does the work. That kind of thinking is something we need to protect in our kids.

The Whole Family Showed Up

One of my favorite things about this book is that it's not just Zoë's story. The whole family is in it.

Her brother Dylan is a truck company. Her sister Jasmine is an ambulance. Her mom is a hazmat unit because she cleans up messes, which, if you've ever raised kids, you know is absolutely accurate. Her cousins are air sea rescue. Her grandparents are chiefs. And me? I come in as the heavy rescue. The Squad. Because that's what I do.

Every character in this book has a role that reflects who they actually are in real life. That wasn't an accident. That was me as a father paying attention to my family and finding a way to put them all on the page together.

What I Want Kids and Parents to Take Away

For the kids, it's simple. You can be whatever you set your mind to. Even a fire engine.

For the parents, it's a little deeper. We grow up, and somewhere along the way, we stop giving ourselves permission to imagine. Life gets serious. Goals get practical. Dreams get edited down into things that feel more reasonable. This book is a quiet reminder that imagination is not something to outgrow. It's something to protect. In your kids and in yourself.

Read this book to your child and then ask them what they want to be. Don't correct them. Don't redirect them. Just listen. You might be surprised by what they say.

Why I Wrote Bleed: Shadows of Redemption (And Why Frank Wright's Story Needed to Be Told)

Frank Wright didn't come from my imagination. Well, at least not completely.

He came from my block.

He came from the songs I grew up listening to, the corners I walked past, the faces I recognized before I ever knew what their lives really looked like behind closed doors. Frank is an accumulation of culture, of music, of lived experience that started long before I ever put on a fire helmet or picked up a pen.

Bleed: Shadows of Redemption was inspired by "N****s Bleed" by the Notorious B.I.G., but the soul of this book came from growing up in Cleveland. And I want to be clear about something. I didn't grow up in the rap version of the hood. I grew up in the real one. The one without a soundtrack playing behind it. The one where people are just trying to get through the day. My neighborhood wasn't the worst in Cleveland, but it was real enough. Drugs were there. Dealers were there. Users were there. I saw it from a young age, and none of it was glamorous.

That's Frank. He's not a cliché. He's a human being.

From the Hood to Working in the Hood

What connected me to this story even deeper was that I didn't just grow up around that world. I went back to work in it.

When I worked for the East Cleveland Fire Department, I was in one of the most distressed cities in the entire region. The trauma I witnessed there, the calls, the stories, the people, all of it added another layer to what I already knew. Then I came to Chicago and got assigned to the west side. And I'll tell you something that people don't always say out loud. The west side of Chicago can be so brutal that it doesn't even get the media coverage that other parts of the city get. The news doesn't always show up. The stories don't always get told.

I saw that as a problem. And writing became one of my answers to it.

Loyalty. Survival. Second Chances.

People ask me which of those three themes hits closest to home. Honestly, I can't pick just one. That's why all three are woven through the entire story. Because all three have been real factors in my own life. And I'd bet everything I have that they've been real factors in the lives of the people who will pick this book up.

Loyalty will test you. Survival will break you down and build you back up. And second chances are what separate the people who make it from the people who don't. Frank lives all three of those things, and so have I.

What I Want You to Feel When You Finish It

Satisfied. But still hungry.

That's the goal. When you close this book, I want you to feel like the story delivered. Like it gave you something real. But I also want you sitting there thinking about what happens next. Because Frank's story is not done. He is an ever-evolving character, and the deeper I take him into this series, the more you're going to understand that this was never a gangster story.

It's a human story.

Why This Book Needs to Exist Right Now

The world needs more black voices telling their own stories on their own terms.

I wrote Bleed because I wanted to show that we all bleed the same color. The same blood runs through all of us, regardless of where we come from or what we look like. And when you write from that place, from that truth, the story stops being about a guy from the streets and starts being about every person who has ever had to fight their way toward something better.

That's what Frank is really doing. Fighting toward something better.

And that's a story worth reading.

Why I Wrote Hey, New Guy! (And Why Every First Responder Needs to Read It)

There's always somebody in the firehouse who says they didn't know.

Didn't know the culture. Didn't know what was expected. Didn't know how to carry themselves in the academy, on the rig, or in the station. And for a long time, that was just accepted as part of the process. You figure it out, or you don't.

I wasn't willing to accept that anymore.

Hey, New Guy! didn't come from one single moment. It came from years of watching people walk into the fire service completely blind and then struggle to find their footing because nobody handed them a map. I wanted to write the map. I went through paramedic school, the police academy, and the fire academy. I've seen the process from multiple angles. And what I kept noticing was the same gap every single time. People had the desire, but nobody gave them the insight.

So I sat down and wrote the book I wish had existed.

It's Not Just a Fire Book

This isn't a book just for firefighters. I wrote it for anyone stepping into the world of public safety. Fire. EMS. Police. If you're serious about a career in civil service, this book was written with you in mind.

I also wrote it for the person who wants to hand something to somebody they love. A parent whose kid just said they want to be a firefighter or a paramedic. A mentor who wants to give a candidate a real head start. The book has history, workouts, recipes, and real talk about the culture. It's not a textbook. It's more of an overall vibe from someone who has lived it.

The Thing People Underestimate the Most

Everyone talks about the physical demands of the job. And yes, you need to be in shape. This job can kill you if you're not prepared.

But the mental health piece? That's what people walk right past.

Mental health is the real reason I sat down and ground this book out. The fire service has a culture that doesn't always make it easy to talk about what you're carrying. And if nobody talks about it, people suffer alone. I wanted this book to open that door before candidates ever walk through the station doors for the first time. The awareness has to come early.

What Changed in 20 Years

When I came into the fire service, the only person I had to take care of was me. Now I have a family at home and my second fire family at work. Both deserve time. Both deserve attention. And somewhere in between all of that, I have to carve out time for myself, too.

The biggest thing that changed over 20 years isn't what I know about the job. It's how I manage my life around it. Time is the resource nobody gives you back. Learning how to protect it is one of the most important skills you can build in this career.

The One Thing I Want You to Take Away

Take this seriously.

You cannot train too hard or study too much for a job that can kill you. This isn't a career you ease into. It's a career you commit to. The people you serve are counting on you to show up ready. Your crew is counting on you to show up ready. And one day, when it matters most, you're going to count on yourself to show up ready.
